Communes of Elba
The island of Elba has seven communes, administrative areas that govern day to day life here. Italy is divided up into a hierarchical system of regions, provinces, communes and fractions. There are twenty regions and 110 provinces, Elba's region is Tuscany and its province is Livorno. The communes (comune singular or comuni plural in Italian), relate to the main towns within each province, and the fractions (frazioni in Italian), are the next level down of town or village.
The seven communes of Elba are Campo nell'Elba, Capoliveri, Marciana, Marciana Marina, Porto Azzurro, Portoferraio and Rio. Five of those communes are named after their respective towns on the island, the only anomalies being the commune of Rio whose main town is Rio Marina, and the commune of Campo nell'Elba which relates to the area around its main town of Marina di Campo.
If you weren't confused enough by now, then I should also add that within the commune of Campo nell'Elba, there's another whole island, that of Pianosa, which you can visit on a day-trip from Elba.
